Why Mil Sistemika chose Carmenta, and remains a customer fifteen years later.
Mil Sistemika, a Slovenian company specializing in defense software, has been active in the industry since 2010, and a Carmenta customer from the very beginning. They provide Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Command and Control (C2) software that supports the entire digital chain of command, from top-level planning down to dismounted soldiers in the field.
Mil Sistemika relies on Carmenta Engine for a wide range of use cases, including handling geo calculations, line-of-sight, and 2525 symbology. In their latest iteration of their dismounted soldier system software, they replaced their in-house mapping engine and went “full Carmenta” on all platforms.
“Using Carmenta Engine takes a lot of repetitive or very complicated workload off our developers”, says Matevz Ferjancic, CEO at Mil Sistemika.
Some features that they needed were already available and maintained to the required standards in Carmenta Engine. Others, such as weather features and air route/corridor planning, were added later, significantly cutting down their development time and effort.
Back in 2010, Mil sistemika conducted a thorough evaluation of available GIS engines, with performance on low-end hardware as a key requirement.
“We selected Carmenta based on its performance on low-end hardware. It was fast enough to handle the quickly changing situations in battlefield management systems, and by far the fastest engine we tested,” says Ferjancic.
While performance was the deciding factor, Ferjancic emphasizes how impressed they’ve been with Carmenta’s developer support throughout the years.
“Carmenta is agile and flexible. Their development support is second to none,” he says.
The team benefited from on-site training early on, which helped them get up to speed quickly.

Based in Slovenia, Mil Sistemika has provided defense solutions since 2010. With a team combining software developers and military experts, the company initially supported the Slovenian Army’s C4I systems before expanding to international clients. Today, they offer COTS Command and Control solutions compliant with STANAG 2014 standards, including their flagship products: STORM (HQ planning), THUNDER (vehicle-based execution), and LIGHTNING (dismounted soldier Android app). Their latest innovations integrate AI, UAV/UGV control, swarm support, and CBRN modules.
Since 2016, Carmenta Engine has been a core part of the UMS Skeldar Ground Control Station, where features such as a dynamically updated terrain profile ensure that the drone operator is always fully aware of the surrounding area.
