“We see significant time savings in development”

HENSOLDT, a global leader in sensor solutions for defense and security applications, relies on Carmenta’s technology to power some of its most critical mission planning and visualization capabilities.

In this interview with the team at HENSOLDT, they share how Carmenta’s geospatial technologies are at the heart of HENSOLDT’s mission planning software – delivering both significant time savings and enhanced capabilities.

Powering OPTARION

One of the key systems where Carmenta technology is integrated is the modular mission support system OPTARION. Designed specifically for planning, executing and debriefing military air operations, OPTARION serves as a central ground station supporting the helicopters NH90, CH-53GA and Tiger. Carmenta technology has been used in OPTARION for more than twelve years. In particular, OptaMission leverages Carmenta Engine for mission flight planning, including 3D flight replay.

HENSOLDT’s new framework for software-defined defense applications will also incorporate Carmenta Engine in a variety of use cases across multiple products.

Significant time savings in development

Carmenta Engine’s geospatial capabilities are essential to HENSOLDT’s Route Planning Software. Furthermore, the map visualization of military situation for mission planning is a central function in the military air operation process – particularly the display of aeronautical data as well as military tactical overlay display.

According to the HENSOLDT team, one of the most tangible benefits of using Carmenta Engine is the significant time savings in development. Thanks to Carmenta Engine’s native support for multiple data formats – including nautical charts, aeronautical information, and military symbology – HENSOLDT has eliminated the need for project-specific custom integrations.

Strategic Advantage and Enduring Collaboration

By partnering with Carmenta, HENSOLDT avoids the complexity of developing a GIS engine in-house. Instead, they gain access to a mature, continuously evolving platform backed by Carmenta’s deep domain expertise.

HENSOLDT values Carmenta as a reliable and well-established partner, known for excellent support and training. This ensures that developers feel confident and comfortable throughout the development process. As a result, other projects within HENSOLDT are encouraged to use Carmenta products.

“The Carmenta support/development team helps our developers in finding the right and efficient solution for implementing functions suitable for our customers.” – The HENSOLDT team

With over a decade of successful collaboration, the HENSOLDT team looks forward to continued collaboration in the upcoming years, to meet future challenges and demands within the military mission planning environment.

“Carmenta Engine has played – and will continue to play – a vital role in enabling our products to be ready for future demand of armed forces. Notably with maps visualization and 3D features while planning and debriefing military missions.”
