Master’s Thesis: Parallel algorithms for off-road vehicle routing on the GPU

Work on real technical challenges alongside experienced software engineers and domain experts. Gain first-hand experience of developing advanced geospatial software used in mission-critical systems around the world.
At Carmenta, a master’s thesis is more than an academic assignment. You’ll become part of our engineering environment and work closely with the people who design, develop, and maintain software used in defense, public safety, maritime, and uncrewed systems around the world.

As a thesis student, you’ll have the opportunity to explore new ideas, contribute to meaningful projects, and learn from experienced mentors. For us, it’s an opportunity to gain new perspectives and learn from talented students.
For many students, the thesis project is also the beginning of a longer relationship with Carmenta. We are very proud that many of our employees first joined us through a master’s thesis project.
We currently don’t have any available Master’s Thesis topics. However, we regularly develop new topics and are always interested in connecting with talented students who want to explore real-world challenges in advanced geospatial technology.
Stay tuned and if you’re passionate and have an idea of your own, you are welcome to reach out to us on employment@carmenta.com.
Geospatial technology has the potential to greatly improve the situational awareness for end users. But if the APIs to the technology are not easy for developers to use, the applications they build with it will not benefit from the full capability of the technology.
The task is to design and perform a usability study that can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of geospatial APIs when performing common operations, and to then use the results of the study to suggest and implement improvements in the APIs to Carmenta’s geospatial technology.
This thesis is suitable for students interested in API design and developer experience (DX).

Gaussian splatting is a volume rendering technique that can be used to reconstruct and visualize 3D environments from photos or videos. It provides higher fidelity than traditional visualization methods such as point clouds and 3D meshes.
The purpose of the master’s thesis is to evaluate how gaussian splatting can be used for visualization and analysis in a real-time geospatial toolkit.
Aspects to be evaluated include combining the splats with other geographic information and their ability to support analytics, such as intervisibility calculations.
This thesis is suitable for students interested in algorithms, visualization and 3D graphics.

Unmanned Ground Vehicles, UGVs, are increasingly being used in modern warfare, where they perform tasks such as medical evacuations, resupply missions and demining.
For a UGV to operate autonomously in such an environment, it needs to navigate in such a way that it avoids being spotted and attacked by the enemy.
The task is to set up a simulated tactical environment with friendly and enemy units, then route simulated UGVs through this environment, exploring how changes in the routing algorithm affects survivability. The work will be performed in the Robotic Operating System (ROS) environment, using Carmenta’s technology for off-road routing.
This thesis is suitable for students interested in simulation-based optimization and routing algorithms.
